Tier cliffs are not letter grades — Elite through Fringe on Collectrio

What a tier actually is

Per /methodology, after ratings sort, Collectrio walks the list and starts a new tier when the gap to the next name is large enough. The published cliff in lib/elo.ts and on /methodology is 320 on the public number scale. Labels walk Elite → High → Core → Depth → Fringe as those cliffs appear. That is the whole tier system — not a second score bolted onto Elo.

The public number itself is clamped to the 1000–9999 band described on /methodology. Tiers slice that ordered list. If two names sit close, they often share a tier even when collectors argue loudly. If a gap clears the cliff, Collectrio draws a new label. Reading columns: /guides/reading-the-board.

Why collectors misread Elite

Elite sounds like a trophy stamp. On Collectrio it only means “near the top of this lens’s current sorted list, before the first cliff.” A name can be Elite on Binder and Core on Value the same week — lens conflicts are normal, not bugs. Elite is also not a grading company grade and not a GO appraisal screen. Collectrio shows abstract proxies — names, set and number or dex facts — never official art and never slab labels. Fringe is not an insult

Fringe means lower conviction on this comparable set after later cliffs — not “trash forever.” Product copy and /glossary frame Fringe as borderline / lower conviction. Store on Cards or Transfer on GO can still be the honest verb for a Fringe name in a forced trio without moral theater. Cleanup tone: /guides/box-cleanup-philosophy.

Fringe names still matter for package depth and for teaching the board what people release. If every trio refuses a bottom, Elo cannot separate chase from depth. Verbs: /guides/sleeve-swap-store and /guides/train-trade-transfer.

Cards: cliffs under Sleeve / Swap / Store

On /cards/rankings, pick Binder when display permanence is the question, Playable when list usefulness owns the night, Value when Swap fairness owns it. Scan Elite for names the crowd keeps defending on that lens. Scan High and Core for package peers. Glance Fringe only when you need an honest Store candidate or filler you plan to run through /cards/calculator.

A Binder Elite SIR that falls to High or Core on Value is a classic ladder premium — chase ladder notes: /guides/cards-chase-ladder. GO: cliffs under Train / Trade / Transfer

On /go/rankings, Dex cliffs answer living-dex and form permanence. Raids cliffs answer invest priority among attackers. Trade bait cliffs answer receive-side desire. A Dex Elite shiny can be Raids Fringe against real attackers — that is lens truth, not a broken board. Keep-or-trade map: /guides/pokemon-go-keep-or-trade. Untradeable or restricted names still take Train decisions on Dex or Raids when Trade isn't possible; do not invent a Trade fairness story the game will not allow. Special and registration friction stays in GO — /guides/go-special-trade-tax — while Collectrio only ranks relative crowd strength.

Tiers move when trios move

Because K in Elo is meaningful (published as 58 on /methodology), surprising trios move ratings more than predictable ones. Cliffs can redraw when gaps grow or shrink. Trend is the seven-day public-number change on the same lens — not a tier rewrite by itself, and not a marketplace candle. Noise discipline: /guides/trend-without-noise.

What tiers will not do for you

Tiers will not convert into dollars, shipping fairness, dust budgets, or authenticity. They will not tell you whether to grade a card or purify a shadow. They will not merge Cards and GO — /guides/two-boards-never-mix. They will not replace your sentence about tonight’s decision.

A short practice loop

Write one sentence. Pick Cards or GO. Unlock with Sleeve / Swap / Store or Train / Trade / Transfer once each. Open rankings. Note the Elite cluster and the first cliff. Flip the sibling lens and watch who falls. Only then draft a tiny calculator package if a real deal exists.
