When Binder ≠ Value (and Dex ≠ Trade bait)

A lens is a comparable set

When Binder Elite and Value Elite diverge for the same printing, the crowd is saying “we would Sleeve this for the binder” and separately “we would not pay as much Swap pressure for it.” Both can be true. Your job is to pick which sentence matches tonight’s decision.

Cards: Binder vs Value

Binder wins when the decision is display, grade intent, vintage nostalgia, or refuse-to-break sets. Value wins when you are building a Swap package, checking liquidity, or deciding whether chase pride is distorting fairness. Playable wins when the card is for the list — not when you are arguing binder hierarchy.

Classic conflict: a modern SIR sits Elite on Binder and Mid on Value because everyone wants it in the binder but packages treat it as sticky. If you are offering that SIR away, Value is the honest fairness lens — you are moving liquidity. If you are refusing to move it, Binder is the honest hold lens — stop running Value numbers to justify a no.

Open /cards/rankings, flip lenses on the same names, and note tier cliffs. Tier gaps of Elite vs Fringe across lenses are the conflict signal. Then open /cards/calculator only on the lens you chose.

GO: Dex vs Trade bait vs Raids

Dex elevates living-dex holes, shinies, regionals, and form chase. Trade bait elevates what partners want to receive. Raids elevates invest-worthy PvE and battle pieces. A shiny regional can be Dex Elite and Trade bait Core if mirror interest is soft. A non-shiny raid attacker can reverse that pattern.

Conflict example: you want to Trade a hundo legendary you would also Train for raids. On Raids you might Train it in a trio against weaker attackers. On Trade bait you might Trade it for a shiny you lack. Those are different questions — rank separate trios on each lens instead of forcing one vote to mean both. Unlock path: /go. How to pick for a decision

Write the decision in one sentence before you touch the UI. “Is this binder-worthy against these two chase cards?” is Binder. “Is this Swap package close?” is Value. “Do I invest dust?” is Raids or Train-focused thinking on Raids lens. “Do I need this for the dex?” is Dex. “Will anyone want this in a trade?” is Trade bait.

When you need two lenses

Some deals need a dual read: Binder to decide if you can emotionally move a card, Value to price the package if you can. Dex to decide if a shiny is a hole, Trade bait to see if the offer is attractive. Do the hold/hole lens first. Only if the answer is “I can move this” do you switch to the fairness lens and open the calculator.

Off board is a lens signal

A name can be in the catalog and still show Off board on a lens where it does not belong — bulk energy on Binder, pure trophy shinies on Raids, and so on. That is intentional. If your deal hangs on an Off board name for the lens you picked, either switch lens or accept you are trading off-board intuition, not crowd Elo. Details: /guides/reading-the-board.

Calculator follows the lens you unlocked

The calculators at /cards/calculator and /go/calculator package the same trio-driven ratings for the active board context. Modifiers (NM / LP / MP on Cards; Lucky / Needs XL on GO) adjust lines — they do not fix a wrong lens. Building packages: /guides/building-a-trade-package. Conflict checklist

State the decision sentence. Pick the matching lens. Rank one trio with honest verbs. Compare the conflicting lens only as a second opinion. Package on the lens that owns the deal. If the second opinion screams, name the premium or discount out loud instead of hiding it in modifiers.

Writing better decision sentences

Weak sentence: “Is this fair?” Strong sentence: “On Value, is this SIR plus LP depth close to their two NM Core alts?” Weak: “Should I trade this shiny?” Strong: “On Dex, is this shiny still a hole, and on Trade bait, is their offer receive-side attractive after registration?”

Strong sentences name the lens, the names, and the constraint. They make conflicts obvious before you touch the UI. Keep a note of sentences that produced clean sessions; reuse them. Pair with calculator checklists in /guides/how-calculator-works.
